Few of Many Benefits of Soy Wax

Natural Soy Wax

There is a big debate in the candle-making world: soy wax versus paraffin. Some people swear by soy wax, while others stick to paraffin because they believe it burns brighter and longer. But many people don’t realize that high-quality, sustainable, and responsibly sourced soy wax lasts longer and is a much better choice for the environment. Let’s look at some of the reasons why soy wax is better for the Planet.

Soybean pod

How Is Soy Wax Made?

Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. It is a renewable resource, meaning it can be grown and harvested repeatedly. Soybeans are also one of the most efficient crops when it comes to land use. After harvesting, the soybeans are removed the the pods, cleaned, crushed and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted and hydrogenated to turn it into solid soy wax. The leftover soybean meal can be used as animal feed or fertilizer.

Soy Wax Burns Longer

Natural Soy wax is also more sustainable than other types of vegetable or paraffin waxes due to its longer lifespan. A well-made soy wax candle will burn slowly, giving you hours of enjoyment (the same applies to wax melts!). For example, if a soy wax candle with a cotton wick will burn for about 32 hours, the same weight paraffin wax candle with a paper wick will only last for about 24 hours. So on average, soy wax candles will burn 30-40% slower!

Soy Wax is Non-Toxic

When it comes to environmental and health friendliness, soy wax is the clear winner. As soy wax is made entirely from natural sources, it burns cleaner. Candles and wax melts made from soy wax don’t produce as much soot (carcinogens, toxins, and solid pollutants) as those made from other waxes, making them a better choice for indoor air quality and your respiratory system.

Soy Wax is Easy To Clean

Spills of soy wax are much easier to get out of clothing, tablecloths and upholstery. Soy wax is water-soluble, so all you need is some hot water and dish soap to get the job done. Furthermore, soy wax is biodegradable, so any spills will quickly break down and won’t cause long-term damage to the environment. Oil-based stains from paraffin candles, on the other hand, can be a lot more challenging to remove.

Soy Wax is Versatile

Soy wax is pretty simple to work with for candle and wax melt makers. It can be used in a wide range of containers, holds well colours and fragrances, and has a good “scent throw” (the ability to fill a room with scent). Soy wax can also be used to make other types of candles, such as soy tealights, soy pillars, soy votives and soy melts. Furthermore, soy wax can be used to make various other products, like soy crayons, soy lotion bars, soy lip balms, etc.

Natural Soy Wax is Good Choise For Vegans

If you’re looking for vegan-friendly and cruelty-free candles or wax melts, soy is the way to go. Because soy wax is made from soybeans, it does not contain animal products and is considered vegan. When paired with natural essential oils, soy candles and wax melts make an excellent choice for anyone practising a vegan, natural or sustainable lifestyle and anyone who enjoys the aromatherapy benefits of essential oils.

Environmental Impact of Soy Wax

This is where things get tricky… The environmental impact of soy wax depends on many different factors, but mostly on soybean farming practices. Due to growing soybean demand, soybean farming has expanded into rainforest areas, which has led to deforestation in some cases, which can lead to the extinction of plant and animal species. Another problem is soil erosion caused by soybean farming. The soybean plant has shallow roots, making the soil more vulnerable to wind and water erosion.

The best practice is to search for products claiming that their soy wax is responsibly sourced, which means that the soybeans were grown sustainably, with little to no impact on the environment.

You Deserve Better!

If you’re a fan of candlelight, soy wax is a great way to enjoy all the benefits of candles or wax melts without harming the environment. Next time you’ll go out to get some candles or wax melts, choose the ones made of responsibly sourced soy wax! Your lungs, your furniture and the Planet will thank you!
