The open jar sits happily anywhere you’d like a little scent, and because there’s no flame or cable it goes places a candle or plug-in simply can’t.

• Desks and home offices: A few drops of something fresh to mark the start of the working day.
• Bedside tables and bathrooms: Gentle, flame-free scent you can leave exactly where it is.
• Hallways and entrances: A quiet welcome that greets you every time you come home.
• Small spaces: Cloakrooms, wardrobes and bookshelves, where a candle isn’t practical.

• Set up. Tip the lava rocks into the jar. They should sit just above the rim, so the scent isn’t trapped inside the glass.
• Add your oil. Add up to 10 drops of your chosen blend, spreading them across the rocks rather than onto one stone. Start with three or four drops if you’d prefer something subtle – you can always add more.
• Let it settle. The scent builds over the next few minutes and carries on through the hours that follow.
• Top up. When the fragrance fades, simply add a few more drops. There’s no need to rinse in between.
• Change blend. To switch to a completely different scent, rinse the rocks under luke warm running water, leave them to air dry fully, then start again with your new blend. A few things that help: keep the jar out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, place it somewhere with a little air movement rather than a sealed cupboard, and remember that a smaller room will always smell stronger than a large open-plan one.

Lava stone is naturally porous – a honeycomb of tiny openings formed as volcanic rock cools. Those openings hold essential oil and release it slowly into the air, which is why a few drops go on scenting a room long after you’ve put the bottle away.

There’s no heat involved, so nothing is altered or burned off. What you smell is the oil as it is.

The jar is left deliberately open, with the rocks sitting just above the rim so the scent has nothing to travel through. It’s a sleek, quiet piece of design that’s happy on display.

Ten drops gives a full, confident scent. Three or four gives you something far more subtle. There’s no wrong answer, and no waiting for a wax pool to form before you find out.
