There’s something quietly lovely about a candle that becomes part of a room – the jar you’ve chosen, the scent you come home to. The only thing that never sat right with me was the idea that all of that had to end up in the bin.
It’s the whole reason candle refills now exist at Snug Scent.
I’m Rita, the founder and maker behind Snug Scent. I have a background in chemistry and trained in natural cosmetic formulation at Formula Botanica, so ingredient choices and sustainability aren’t afterthoughts for me – they’re built into every product from the start.
Why I Introduced Candle Refills to Snug Scent
We tell ourselves we’ll find a use for the jar – a vase, a pen pot, somewhere to keep odds and ends. But in reality, most of us don’t. The usual story is that you burn a candle down and the vessel ends up in the bin, or at best the recycling, over and over, every time you buy a new one. The more I thought about it, the more that felt at odds with everything else we try to do, from planting a tree with every order to running on renewable energy.
What I actually wanted: a candle you keep
The question I kept coming back to was simple. Why should you have to buy a whole new candle – glass and all – just because the wax has run out?
That’s really all a candle refill is. Instead of replacing the entire thing, you keep the jar you already have and drop in a fresh candle. The vessel stays in your home, doing its job, and there’s far less to throw away each time. It’s not a reinvention of anything. It’s just a more sensible version of what we were already making.
And now the jars can’t be recycled at the kerb
There’s another reason this has been on my mind lately.
From 2026, England’s Simpler Recycling reforms are changing what many kerbside collections will accept – and candle jars are often excluded. Partly because residue and the heat-resistant glass can cause problems at sorting facilities and contaminate the whole batch. It’s worth checking with your local council, but for many of us the jar simply won’t be collected any more.
So the “at least I can recycle it” comfort that a lot of us leaned on has quietly gone. Reusing the jar isn’t just the kinder choice now; for many of us, it’s the only thing that keeps it out of landfill – which is exactly what a refill lets you do.
And if you ever do finish with a jar for good, it still needn’t go in the bin. I’ll be honest – refills aren’t for everyone
I don’t want this to read as me telling you refills are the only right choice, because they’re not.
If you love switching up your décor, or you buy candles mainly as gifts, a brand-new candle in its own glass still makes perfect sense – and we’ll always make those. A single refill won’t single-handedly fix anything, either; I’m wary of any brand that claims one small product will save the planet. What I can say is that if you find a scent you genuinely love and want to come back to, refilling it is the kinder, cheaper, less wasteful way to do that. For me, that was reason enough to introduce them.
How our candle refills work
If you’re ready to give it a try, the whole process is simpler than you might think – here’s all you need to do:
- Finish your candle. Enjoy it down to the last safe burn (1-2 cm from the bottom).
- Clean the glass. Pour in warm (not boiling) water so any leftover wax floats to the top, or pop the jar in the freezer so it shrinks and lifts out. Then wash with warm, soapy water and dry. Don’t wash it in the dishwasher.
- Remove the packaging. Unwrap the refill and peel off the label from the sticky tab on the bottom.
- Drop in your refill and light. Carefully insert the refill into the jar and gently press it down so it sticks to the bottom of the jar. That’s genuinely it.

One thing I was firm about: a refill had to be the same candle, not a budget version – the same natural soy wax, the same pure essential oils, the same cotton wick. You can read the full ingredient details on our natural candle refill.
Why I think they’re worth it
Setting aside the sustainability side for a moment, there’s something I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I do: the sense of a candle having a longer life. You choose a glass you love once, and it stays with you – refilled with whichever scent suits the season or your mood. It feels less disposable, and honestly, a bit more personal.
So if I had to gather up why a refill is worth it: you’re being kinder to the planet, you’re spending a little less each time – there’s no new glass to pay for – and you can return to a scent you already know you love. Three quiet wins from one simple change.
