How to Use Snug Scent Candles

Lighting a Snug Scent candle is a calming ritual. Our natural candles are poured with 100% natural soy wax and pure essential oils, so they burn longer and produce less soot than paraffin. The fragrance is gentler because soy wax has a subtler scent throw. So, to enjoy the full benefits of our home fragrances, a little care goes a long way.

Proper Candle Care

1. Trim the wick

Before every burn, cut the wick to about 5-6 mm (¼ inch). A short wick keeps the flame steady and reduces soot. Use a wick trimmer for precision (scissors work too).

A trimmed wick keeps the flame steady, reduces soot, and helps your natural candle burn cleanly.

2. Make the first burn count

This sets the “memory” of your candle. Let the wax melt to the edges of the jar on the first light. This full melt pool can take 2-4 hours and ensures an even burn every time and prevents tunnelling later.

3. Burn for 2–4 hours

Natural soy wax candles like a gentle rhythm; sessions of 2–4 hours give you a full fragrance without overheating.

4. Place carefully

Set your candle on a stable, heat‑resistant surface away from flammable objects and out of draughts.

Snuff instead of blowing. Extinguish the flame with a candle snuffer or dipper. Snuffing prevents smoke and keeps the wax surface clean.

For Best Results (Little Hacks & Fixes)

Even the best natural candles can behave unexpectedly. Here’s how to keep them burning beautifully:

When the scent feels light

Soy wax releases fragrance more gently than paraffin. Wait until the wax has melted edge to edge before judging the aroma. Burning in a smaller room helps if you want a stronger scent. Covering the candle between uses preserves the essential oils.

When tunnelling appears

A “memory ring” forms if the first burn is too short. To correct it, let the candle burn longer next time so the wax can even out. Keep it away from draughts, and gently straighten the wick while the wax is soft.

When the flame misbehaves

A tall or flickering flame often means the wick is too long or the candle is in a draught. Trim the wick to 5-6 mm and move the candle to a calmer spot. If a black “mushroom” forms, extinguish, trim and relight once cooled.

When you see frosting or soot

Soy wax can develop a frosted surface – this natural crystal pattern doesn’t affect performance. Soot or wick mushrooming usually signals that the candle has burned too long; keep sessions to 2–4 hours and snuff the flame instead of blowing it out.

If You’re Struggling to Light It

When your candle burns halfway down, use long candle matches or a long-reach lighter. They protect your fingers and make lighting effortless.

A quiet word on snuffers

Candle snuffers aren’t just charming accessories. Using one avoids hot wax splatter and smoky blow‑outs and helps the wick stay centred for an even burn. It’s a small tool that makes a big difference.

Candle Safety: What to Never Do

Safety is part of the relaxing ritual. These “never” rules help protect your home and prolong your luxury candle:

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always stay nearby while it’s lit.
  • Never place near flammables or within reach of children and pets. Maintain a generous distance from curtains, books and little hands.
  • Never burn for more than four hours. Long burns cause the wick to mushroom and the container to overheat.
  • Never burn all the way to the bottom. Stop when about 1 cm of wax remains to avoid exposing the wick’s metal base.
  • Never move a candle with liquid wax or use water to extinguish. Hot wax can spill and water can cause splatter. Use a snuffer instead.

Taking a moment to set things up properly turns candle care into self‑care. Prepare your space, light thoughtfully, and enjoy the calm glow.

Sustainable Packaging

We believe luxury home fragrances should never cost the Earth. Therefore we use the following:

Cornstarch Packing Peanuts (“Corn”)

  • 100% compostable
  • Dissolve in water
  • Suitable for compost or general waste

Boxes

  • Recyclable, or flatten and recycle it when you’re finished. The paper fillings can go into your household recycling or compost.
  • Reusable for storage or gifting

Glass Containers

  • Reusable. When your candle is finished, don’t throw the jar away. To clean it, pour hot (not boiling) water into the jar so the wax softens and floats to the top, or place the jar in the freezer so the wax shrinks and pops out. Wash the jar with warm, soapy water. Then give it a new purpose – as a plant pot, pen holder, bathroom organiser or tealight lantern.
  • Returnable through our upcycling scheme

We also reuse packaging materials wherever possible and plant a tree for every order placed.

Our Upcycling Scheme

We proudly run our own upcycling scheme, allowing you to return eligible glass containers so they can be cleaned, sterilised, and reused.

This helps to:

  • Reduce waste
  • Minimise unnecessary production
  • Extend the life cycle of our packaging
  • Lower environmental impact
